I think “art” is appropriate, at least in the case of what Spielmann calls “real sacrifices”, because it is a matter of judgment and imagination rather than something our finite intellects can deduce or calculate to a conclusion. Surely chess is more of a science or a branch of maths and logic, and maybe elements of statistics and probability. Of course, great chess is often poetry in motion to we less talented observers and there’s always the psychological element, but the computer engines don’t indulge in abstract thinking.
