About Daina Taimina Daina Taimina was born in Riga, Latvia in the same year as an International Congress of Mathematicians pivotal to non-Euclidean geometry as she describes in the Introductionso her influence on the hyperbolic plane almost seems fated.

It has adventyres a few decades since my college math classes, but Daina Taimina managed to keep my interest.

The models are deceptively interesting. Now a professor of mathematics at Cornell University, Taimina regularly participates in art exhibitions and educational workshops related to her crocheted models. Any math book that makes me reach for a crochet hook and some sketching yarn is a fun book in my opinion.

If you want a full understanding of why, do go here: I want to crochet a hyperbolic plane!

Finally, a craft I can get behind Perhaps you will come up with your own variations and ideas. This one is beautifully illustrated, but information about how to create crochteing shapes is not provided.

Description Winner of the Euler Book Prize — Awarded by the Mathematical Association of America With more than full color photographs, this non-traditional, tactile introduction to non-Euclidean geometries also crovheting early development of geometry and connections between geometry, art, nature, and sciences. You will develop an entirely new understanding by actually following the simple witb and crocheting! It’s a great coffee table book and conversation starter If you can get your hands on the hardback, its binding is far more robust.

Even for readers who have no familiarity with crochet, the instructions for producing a simple manifold are lucid, concise, and easily followed. ISBN 3 17 Aug 22, Lists with This Book. Another pplanes of maths and crochet. Now, Daina’s crochet models break through the austere, formal stereotype of mathematics and present a path to a whole-brain understanding of a beautiful cluster of simple and significant ideas.

I would have welcomed more information about the mathematics behind them. Crocheting Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes. Jul 18, Valerie rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: The instructions are not written for the basic-knowlege crocheter and are not set out as clearly as I am used to se I want to crochet a hyperbolic plane!

The crochet sections themselves would have benefited from a glance from Lindsay Stevens or the Stitchstud, both wonderful technical editors for crochet patterns; it’s so much easier to read about crochet when it’s written conventionally, even if British and American adventured do use differe My husband bought this book for me at the MOMath in NYC, I’ve dipped into it all year at my bedside table.

The book helps to change the way of thinking about mathematics – an art of human understanding! The results crochsting extraordinarily beautiful, closely resembling coral reefs.

Joyce rated it really liked it Nov 27, Looking for beautiful books? As illustrated in the book, there is actually negative curvature and hyperbolic geometry all around us, but people generally see it without seeing it. As nearly as I can pplanes, it would be a good way to learn the math involved. Title may be a little misleading, as it’s more mathy than crochet-y, but I’m enough of a math geek that it was just as satisfying. It is truly a book where art, craft, science, and mathematics come together in perfect harmony.

In any case, I hope this book gives you pause for thought and changes your way of thinking about mathematics.
