One of the best things about James Ellroy’s novels is how they have the inexorable force of history behind them–history both real and major the Sleepy Lagoon murder, the zoot suit riots, etc. The full explanatory ending was a little too full and comprehensive for a man me who likes things to ponder on. Danny is an ambitious and upcoming detective and employs scientific gra to gather crime scene evidence.
Hollywood, homosexuals, drugs, jazz, sex, the Mob, crooked cops, etc. That book, which was deliberately written in or edited down to a clipped style, took care of a loose end view spoiler [ Dudley Smith got what was coming to him hide spoiler ] from this book. The three detective characters all have interesting back stories and are aspiring to do different things.
But perserverance paid off, and it is in the later third of ‘The Big Nowhere’, I was sucked right into the narration and could only marvel at the way Ellroy tied up disparate threads together. It was only towards the end of the novel that they all became clear to me, I felt many were unnecessary to the story. Mal needs a big splashy success to boost his career. Like most things, it’s less about politics and ideology and more about money, and how the movie studios can save a buck or two by siding with Cohen’s Teamsters and crushing the fledgling leftist unions, but all three men go along: On the other hand it’s an absolutely spellbinding piece of storytelling.

The narrative voice between the three characters sold me as fully formed characters, but left me unable to differentiate between the three as unique voices.
You know you’ve hit rock bottom when Ellis Loew regards you with contempt when he sees what you’ve done. Ellroy is clearly a master of his craft, leaving little hints amongst the glut of names and dates for the reader to pick up as well as tantalising you to a point of frustration by providing situations when you know more than the characters.
One of the editorial endorsements on my copy describes this book as ‘insane’ and I couldn’t think of a more accurate word.
They move at the whims of men more powerful than they are but still find ways to assert themselves. Some of the turns of phrase, the throwaway lines, the stream of conscious insights are magnificent.
